• Duke of Edinburgh Bronze Award (14+ yr olds) - learn a new skill - Cooking

PLEASE NOTE: THE NEXT DofE COURSE IS JANUARY-APRIL 2025

I offer a 7-part course for those wishing to gain a new skill for the Duke of Edinburgh Bronze Skills Award. Classes last 2hrs each on 7 Saturdays in the spring term of each year and take place in my home kitchen. They provide all the content requirements for the Bronze Award. I started this course in 2016 and was glad to see it survive the Zoom/Covid years and is now back to normal.

Schools normally inform their Year 10 students about the Duke of Edinburgh Award in the September. That gives them time to find courses and experiences they are interested in. My DofE Bronze cooking skills course is usually fully booked by the November. and always starts early in the New Year and runs till around the Easter holidays. So get your daughter/son’s name down quick to ensure a place - there are only 6 available!

Students must also check with their DofE Leader (through School) regularly throughout the process to verify their efforts over the three month period.

These classes will provide both the theoretical and practical side of cooking, with recipe sheets and worksheets for them to fill and keep as part of their evidence gathering to honour the requirements of the course.

All 7 classes take place here and students need to get to The Cobbled Kitchen, 69, Harpenden Road, St Albans, Herts. AL3 6BY on alternate Saturdays from 2pm till 4pm. Specific dates will be given to you once booked onto the course.

Students will be cooking various dishes at each session and will need to bring several lidded takeaway tubs to carry home their food as well as a clean apron each.

£340.00 per student for all 7 sessions. This can be paid in full or in 3 instalments of £80 (also deposit), £130 and £130.

2025 Dates:

  1. Sat 11 Jan, = “Food Safety and Hygiene”

  2. Sat 25 Jan, = cont/d

IN ORDER TO FULFIL THE DofE TIME REQUIREMENTS, YOUR CERTIFICATES AND REPORTS MUST COVER 3 FULL CALENDAR MONTHS. WHEREVER THE HOLIDAYS FALL IN EACH YEAR, THE SESSIONS WILL FIT AROUND THEM. THIS ENSURES FULL COMPLIANCE. REST ASSURED, THE BRONZE MINIMUM OF 12 HOURS OVER 12 WEEKS WILL BE MORE THAN MET!

  • Student Survival Class or Courses (teens and young adults):

If your son or daughter would like to increase his/her independence in the kitchen so you don’t need to worry that they can feed themselves once they’ve flown the nest, book them onto a 2 hour class where they’ll learn up to 6 recipes and loads of budget-cooking hacks. Even better if they do so with a small group of friends (2-6 ppl)!

I’ll teach them everything from Food Safety to Healthy Eating as well as Eating Well on a Budget and some nifty Knife Skills.
